Crumbs

BACKGROUND

Crumbs is an app concept for pet owners to verify whether a product is being recalled. Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a heart muscle disease where the heart chambers enlarge and lose their ability to contract. DCM leads to congestive heart failure. Historically, DCM in dogs was linked to genetics, but in recent years, there have been non-hereditary cases associated with diet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified more than a dozen brands associated with heart disease cases in dogs.

CHALLENGE

Although the FDA has identified which brands are associated with heart disease cases in dogs, pet owners and consumers might not be up-to-date or aware of the current recalls.

TEAM AND MY ROLE

This project was a one-person team. I formed a solution concept. I created a low-fidelity wireframe, visual design elements, and a high-fidelity prototype. Lastly, I made the high-fidelity prototype interactive.

SOLUTION

The solution concept is a mobile app with a self-updating database with current product recalls. The app will have a searchable option where pet owners can type in the product's name. The app will also have a scanning option where pet owners can use their mobile phones to scan a product’s barcode. After searching or scanning a product, the app will generate results and display whether the product is approved (non-recalled product) or disapproved (recalled product).

A prototype is a tool that tells a story. The simplest type of prototype is a low-fidelity rough sketch. A rough sketch was created to communicate the problem and solution concept.

A wireframe is a low-fidelity visual guide that depicts the navigation systems, the arrangement of the interface elements, and the relationship between the interface elements and navigation systems. The wireframes were used as a guide to develop a high-fidelity prototype. Some branding elements were created to complement the high-fidelity prototype and give it a sense of realness. Lastly, the high-fidelity prototype was made to be interactive to better communicate the solution concept and its functionality.

RESULTS

The app is intended to help make the world a better place. It is intended to lower the number of dogs from eating recalled products and hopefully prevent dogs from getting heart disease from their diet. Lastly, it is intended to give pet owners better access to information and knowledge about recalled products.
